The offense placed 28th in runs scored per game and the personnel ERA ranked 22nd. Of which ineffectiveness by the starters were built with a residual effect on the bullpen in which led the Major Leagues throughout innings pitched at that juncture.

In small, the easiest tact for the group would have been to quit and look towards 2015. The 2014 Rays did not.

Never was that emotion stronger than when the Light reached .500 at 61-61 with Aug. 15. Unfortunately, the energy spent trying to arrive at the even point could not be looked after.

'You utilize a lot of mental energy as much as anything to get yourself back again [in] there,' Rays boss Joe Maddon said. 'And it's not easy to do this. You get back there and you've got to maintain this real advanced level of success on a high end against professionals. So it's challenging to do. But I really thought we could. I never thought that we couldn't.

'And all of a sudden we were on the verge of tugging it off. We got back to .Five-hundred and since then it's just been teetering to and fro. Just could not get back to that level of cla of play that we got going on for a long time. It's not easy to do. I understand that.'

Since first attaining the postseason in 2008, your Rays have strung jointly six consecutive winning conditions and they've twice won the particular AL East. So the expect is that this year's season is a great aberration.

'None of us like the fact we're not winning the division,Inch Maddon said. 'It's the goal, it's going to be the target every year. We feel like we will do it. We thought we will do it this year. And in vengeance of all of this, again, only a really bad awkward instant. ... We get into this 1-14 grow and all of a sudden it's really difficult. But I give our fellas a lot of credit. They extended to play hard.'

While Maddon, Sternberg, Rays fans and Rays players do not like how the season will finish off, the effort level never arrived to question.

'Watching our guys, I have been previously really pleased and satisfied with the attitude of our people,' Maddon said. 'In spite of getting to come back from a pretty significant deficit.'

Maddon allowed that several sweet forecasts are destined to turn sour.

'It just transpires,' Maddon said. 'It's nobody's problem. It's just the way this items rolls sometimes. You try for being the best every year. Obviously, it is hard to do.

'I would want to believe we'll reflect on [what happened in 2014] and extremely never let it happen once more, and never let it happen in the following 10 years or so. Get back on which division-winning horse. Because that's each of our goal every year.'

As for continue, Sternberg said 'forward is easy.'

'Thankfully, [the 2014 season is] a strange place for us to be. Any September when games are generally less meaningful than they are usually in the past.'
